What applies to retail floorplans generally applies to pharmacies, too. As we’ve written before (“Tips for Retail Success”), the best retail floorplans take into account demographics and the economic situation of families within a 5-mile radius of the store.
They also make it easy for people to find the hottest and most profitable items. Whatever is driving people to your store and flying off the shelves, you want to make simple for people to get. When the design is right, consumer behavior happens unconsciously; people just know where to go. Your job is to have the right stuff in those crucial spaces.
A pharmacy shelving secret here: You’ll want to be considering a variety of options like Rx bay units, double-slotted uprights and slatwall panels, which are ideal for keeping prescriptions displayed and organized safely behind the counters. Also consider retail wall shelving and retail store sales counters along with the right fixtures and gondola shelves to effectively display cosmetics and OTC medicine. Other behind-the-counter storage needs may include bottle storage units, drawers and security cases.
Another secret: Make sure staff (especially pharmacists) know exactly where to find OTC medication and other products in your store. If your design doesn’t immediately lead customers to the right place by itself, then you need your people to serve as reliable backup when the questions surface. When customers ask, they should be able to get immediate directions. Educate your staff from the very beginning of their training to know your store’s contents and the precise location of every product like they would know the rooms and possessions in their own home.
